NYC’s New Taxi

NYC taxi

Big news for the Big Apple as New York City has unveiled the next generation of city taxis. The Nissan NV200 was introduced to the public yesterday at the New York Auto Show and it’s packing some cool new features.

The NV200 will come with USB and 12V power ports for charging your gear, a rider controlled GPS system and the ability for the rider to control the heat and AC. Some of the lower-tech features include simple but highly functional details like more leg room, a flat floor so you can easily slide across the seat, doors that slide open, lights on the floor and ceiling and a glass sunroof. Everyone seems excited about the anti-microbial odor-absorbing seats that will supposedly keep the car smelling fresh but I’ll believe that when I smell it.

With all these new and improved features it seems odd that the cabs will run on old-fashioned gas engines rather than hybrid or electric ones but there is talk of an electric version arriving in 2017.

The new taxis should be showing up on streets in late 2013. For more information and specs, visit Nissan’s official site by clicking here

Heat Wave

One of my least favorite aspects of life in NYC was the summer. We didn’t need a heat wave to make life uncomfortable – all that concrete and glass could easily turn a typical hot day into a sweaty mess, especially if your day began by waiting 10 minutes on a subway platform. Gross.

Even though I’m just a few hours north of the city now, the weather is dynamically different. One thing is for sure, if it’s hotter than hell up here, it must be ungodly hot in the city right now.

So for all my friends sweating in NYC, here’s a little ditty from Marilyn Monroe, Heat Wave!

It’s A Hell Of A Town!

I’m back in the trees and mountains of upstate NY after a couple of days in The City (that’s New York City in case you were wondering). One of the things I love about NYC is it’s never-ending “soldier on” spirit. If you hadn’t been paying attention to the news of the week, you would never know that a terrorist nearly set off a car bomb in the heart of Times Square earlier this week. The streets were bustling with residents doing their daily thing and tourists driving the residents crazy by clogging the sidewalks with their fanny packs and black socks with shorts outfits. The subways were packed and cruising through Times Square like they always do and people were already chatting about something newer. The car bomb was totally Monday.

NYC Taxi And Pedicab Drivers Fight In The Street

Thank you to TheFinestKindOfPork for sending the following video to me. Straight from the streets of New York City, comes a hysterical scene. A bike-cab driver and a taxi cab driver get in a fight in Times Square. And yes, TFKOP, this sort of thing is fairly common in NYC. In fact, I was in the city last week and saw a similar incident between a cab driver and trucker. I wish my jaded ass thought to video it.

This video is a little long but well worth it.

UPDATE! The video isn’t embedding properly so you will have to click here for the video source to check it out.

So far today has gotten any easier to deal with than it was eight years ago. I’ll never forget watching the towers smoke like giant chimneys and then fall. From our old NYC apartment rooftop we had a view of the buildings from the floor the planes crashed into and up. Watching that first tower suddenly  collapse and fall below our view, blocked by smaller buildings, was the creepiest and most unsettling thing I have ever seen.

Ungh.
