Sticky & Sweet

So I’m sure you are dying to know how Madonna was last night? Well, she was amazing! The show was a great mix of the new album, hits from the past three albums and a few oldies but greaties like Borderline. There were a lot of perfecty placed McCain bashing moments including when McCain’s picture was flashed on a giant screen surrounded by the word “stupid”. Fans will know what song that was. Later during an I Love New York singalong, Madonna shouted “Palin get off my street”! Again, fans you can imagine how that went. There was also a spot when as Madonna played an extreemly grating note on an electric guitar, she shouted “This is the sound of Sarah Palin’s husband on his snow-mobile going home”! It was great!

Madonna danced her ass off from start to finish and looked great while doing it. I was exhausted just watching so I don’t know how a 50 year old can perform to that level every night.

There were a few dull numbers but for the most part it was two hours of “off you seat” hits. We took pictures but I forgot to bring the cable for my camera so I’ll have to wait until tomorrow to post them.

A Little Respect

This weekend Seth, Kitty and I took in the Erasure concert at McCarren Pool in Williamsburg, Brooklyn and I can honestly say, it was one of the best shows I have seen in a long time.

The doors opened at 6 and the first of the two opening acts were supposed to start at 7 so we decided to head to the newly remodeled pool hall on 7th and Flatbush for a little pre-game warm-up. This was all of our first times at the pool hall so I can’t say what it looked like before the renovations. To be honest, the decor didn’t really impress me that much, it was comfortable and the bar had a bunch of over-sized booths, which I really liked. What did impress me was the food, we devoured a plate of wings and some of the best nachos I have ever eaten. Plus, the happy hour two-for-one special and surprisingly super-friendly service sealed the deal for me to return there soon.

After chowing down and throwing back, we decided to head over to the concert and grabed a cab on Flatbush. Once again, we were met with incredibly uncharacteristic friendly service. Our cabbie was so pleasant that he turned off the meter when drove he past our turn (which meant driving an extra couple of blocks – not a big deal where we were) and took us through Williamsburg to the park for free. That’s basicly unheard of in this city, especially when you ask a cabbie to take you somewhere in Brooklyn.

McCarren Pool is by far my new favorite place to see a show. In case you have never been, as the name might tip you off, its a pool. An old outdoor, public, city pool to be exact. The pool itself is a giant sunken concrete pit with all the remnants of it’s water-filled days, including spots of the original bottom paint job. We strolled around for a few minutes grabbed some beers and had a seat towards the deep end for what we assumed would be an hour or more wait before Erasure took the stage. A few sips later and Erasure was out and playing. We quickly hopped up and headed to the stage where we spent the rest of the evening in sweat-viewing distance of Andy Bell.

The show itself was amazing with Erasure singing everything we could have asked for and sounding incredible while doing it. It seemed like the only album they didn’t sample was Abba-esque, which is just a collection of covers and technically not Erasure’s own music. Since we were outside, there was great breeze blowing throughout the show and an incredible light show took place as the sun set. Since everything took place in this giant pool, we could buy a beer and even visit the port-o-potties while never missing what was happening on stage. All in all, it was a perfect evening!

How Was Everybody’s Weekend

After the past three weeks of unusually busy days at work, I decided it was time to let loose and began my weekend Thursday during happy hour with Kelly and her friend, Daniella at Whiskey Ward on the lower East side. I only stayed for a few because I promised Seth that I would prepare dinner back at the apartment that night. I barely know how to to turn the kitchen’s cooking things on so that meant stopping off at our favorite Chinese Mexican joint on the way home. Later that night, Kelly, Who stayed out drinking on the LES, stopped by our place on her way home and ended up staying until Friday evening. We had some more drunk than usual Wii-ing and eventually passed out on the floor in the living room.

Friday evening Seth, Kelly and I headed over to Kitty’s place to meet up with Kitty, her husband, Cyndi, Monkey Daemon, Kitty’s cousin and cousin’s boyfriend. We then headed up to Prospect Park with our blankets, booze and a delicious assortment of cheeses and snacks for a Jazz concert. All though it looked like it might rain at any moment and we even felt a few occasional drops, the weather remained dry and turned into a beautiful night. We all headed back to Kitty’s once the booze ran out after we had our fill of jazz for more drinks and plenty of Robotron.

Seth and I were up bright and early on Saturday eagerly anticipating what was supposed to be the highlight of our weekend – Morrissey at the Garden. We quickly found out Morrissey cancelled the show claiming that his throat was soar. Seth spent some time commiserating over the internets with other pissed off fans, when he happened upon our favorite quote of the day on some message board. One “fan” when discussing Morrissey’s cancellation wrote “that fat old homo pulls this all the time”! We spent the rest of the day cursing that fat old homo and if the new date is scheduled for a night that we can’t make it, that fat old homo will find himself on the receiving end of many angry blog posts here on pop-o-matic.

The rest of my weekend was relatively peaceful and relaxing but peppered with more Morrissey damnations. We even managed to rescue Saturday night by discovering a movie on Demand called ‘Drive Through’ about a killer clown/fast food mascot named Horny, who goes on a killing spree in the OC. I won’t give too much away but let me tell you, I’ll never look at a deep fry machine the same way again.

So, how was your weekend?

My Week In Review Part 1

After an exhausting week I finally have a chance to catch my breath, catch up on some sleep, and catch a good buzz. I can also recap some of the highlights of the past four days starting with Monday’s True Colors concert at Radio City.

The concert, which was sponsored by Logo and the HRC, was a real fagapalooza, which opened with a performance by Amanda Lepore. If you don’t know who that is, I’m afraid I just can’t come up with the words to describe her so why not visit her site. After Amanda, The Gossip took the stage and kicked ass, followed by The Dresden Dolls, who were incredibly talented but not exactly my cup of tea.

Finally, it was time for one of the acts I was there to see – Debbie Harry! Although Harry is currently promoting her new album, she still opened with an oldie – ‘French kissing in the USA’. Aside from ‘New York, New York’, French Kissing was the song I was most hoping she would do. Despite her age (she has to be in her 50s by now), Harry sounded incredible and the only way I can think of to describe her voice is that its like the soft half of Velcro, it feels good and grabs your ruff edges.

After Harry there was a short break followed by the evening’s only disappointment – Rossie O’Donnel doing her “act”. I tried to keep an open mind and forced myself to ignore the fact that she was wearing Crocs but after listening to her for five minutes, I had to retreat to the lobby for a drink.

Then the show really got exciting as Erasure took the stage. This is the band that I always wanted to see during High School but never did. It was worth the wait! They performed some of my favorite songs plus a few from their latest album.

The final performer was Cyndi Lauper, who came up with the idea for the tour. She opened with ‘Hole in my Heart’ and went on to sing most of her most popular hits including ‘Girls Just Want to Have Fun’, ‘When You Were Mine’, ‘Goonies’ (which I don’t think she has ever done live), and of course – ‘True Colors’. When Lauper finished her set, all of the evenings acts returned to the stage to sing ‘Take A Chance on Me’.

The show was hosted by Margaret Cho, who would come out during acts and entertain the crowd. At one point, she said she likes women who are so butch that they roll their own tampons.

My nostalgia tour rolls on next week when Seth & I will be seeing Morrissey at the Garden. I’ll be sure to tell you all about it.

True Colors Teaser

Unfortunately last night by the time I got home from the True Colors tour it was way past my bedtime. Seeing as how I had to get to the Javits this morning on time to see the new Mach 5 and Batmobile unveiled before heading to meet Miley Cyrus (yes, Billy Ray’s daughter) I didn’t have time to blog about the concert. As soon as I have time, I’ll be back with a full report. In the meantime, I’ll just tell you that Cyndi Lauper performed the song “Goonies” and it was incredible!
